The source image of Lyle Ashton Harris’ series of three prints, Untitled (Triptych), had its origin in a group of six self-portraits of photographers commissioned by the New York Times in 2000 (the other five photographers were Nan Goldin, Chuck Close, Malerie Marder, Duane Michaels and Robert Frank). Harris’ original image began as a unique polaroid and he has subsequently reinterpreted the imagery using various digital inkjet and dye sublimation processes on paper, foil and aluminum. In 2014, an image from this body of work was used to create Untitled (Triptych) at Brand X Editions. The prints are six-color silkscreens printed on Saunders Waterford Hot Press 410g, each with an oil based varnish topcoat.

Before, my self-portraits engaged in a certain level of masquerade and more ambiguity. In a way, I’m more stripped bare in this portrait. My own sense of anger and passion is really revealed. But it’s not strictly autobiographical. It also reveals a certain sense of the Passion and a heightened sense of anxiety around desire, death and mortality. I’m interested in those layerings.
