Dexter Davis
Dexter Davis creates powerful, rhythmic, collages using hand-printed woodcuts, found material, as well as various painting and drawing tools. His hand is always present and each element has been rigorously worked and deeply considered. Unsettling at times, Davis presents the viewer with a mix of highly personal subject matter as well as broader, symbolic images, which may be a stand in for issues of social/racial injustice, poverty and urban decay. The visual energy emanating from the surface conjures up joy and hope as well.

“I am an African-American. But my work is a spiritual thing, it meets everybody. It is an energy. I have to ignite the energy force. I don’t do it from the standpoint of being angry. I do it from the standpoint of healing.” - Dexter Davis
