A Selection of Prints from the Dutch Golden Age

A Selection of Prints from the Dutch Golden Age

We are delighted to launch a new exhibition of prints from the Dutch Golden Age, including works from its prelude and aftermath. The selection covers a broad range of subjects, varying from mythology and religion to landscape and portraiture. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to explore the different styles of the period and the technical accomplishments of Dutch printmakers.

Loosely placed in chronological order, the exhibition starts with the engravings from of the late 16th century by Hendrick Goltzius and Jacob Matham. These prints with their mythological subjects demonstrate the refined Mannerist style that originated in Haarlem school of printmaking, which led up to the Golden Age. The subsequent artworks feature etchings and engravings of various subjects dating from the 17th century, including the “Portrait of the Painter Hendrick van Cleve” by Simon Frisius and the “Portrait of the Humanist Peter Scriverius” by Cornelis Visscher. Of particular interest is the chiaroscuro woodcut of “The Prophet Aaron” by Abraham Bloemaert, which was included in the 2019 exhibition “Gravure en Clair-Obscure” in the Musée du Louvre in Paris and published in the accompanying catalogue.

The exhibition concludes with two exceptional prints: “The Hurdy-Gurdy Player” by Jan Broedelet, an exquisite and early example of the use of a mezzotint (a technique that originates in Dutch printmaking), and the etching “Mercury with Argus and Io” by the 18th century peintre-graveur Jacques Kuyper.

All prints offered are available for viewing in our gallery in Amsterdam, by appointment. Further information, extensive catalogue entries, artist biographies, and condition reports, as well as high-resolution digital imagers of each of the works are available on request.
