Emanuel von Baeyer Cabinet is pleased to present a selection of works from our new online exhibition of lithographs by Théodore Géricault (1791 Rouen - 1824 Paris).

The Romantic master of lithography, Géricault started to explore this medium in 1817. It would become the only printmaking technique employed by the artist throughout the course of his career.

As well as several fine impressions around the artist's favorite themes of horses and military subjects, the display on our website features an unrecorded early pen lithograph, some illustrations of Byron's poems, and an impression of the artist's best-known painting The Raft of the Medusa. Finally, a portrait of Géricault by his friend and colleague Léon Cogniet offers the perfect addition to our exhibition.

Almost all the lithographs come from the well esteemed collection of Henri Petiet (1894-1980), most of them featuring his initials and inventory number. We are pleased to display on our website a total of 55 lithographs by Géricault, more than half of the artist's lithographic oeuvre according to Delteil's record. A collection of such a great number of Géricault's prints is very rare nowadays in the commercial world.

He asked Léon Cogniet and Volmar to execute the work, and he directed the project, sending work back and making some corrections. (BM) This is one of the prints taken after The English Set.

Part of the series of six lithographs Oeuvres de Lord Byron, published in 1823. Four lithographs - all displayed in our exhibition - were the result of the collaboration between Gericault and Lami, the other two were by Lami only. Gericault was the first French artist to use themes from Byron. All of Gericault's Byronic works are based on themes of exile and tragic love.

Léon Cogniet

Delicate impression on a full sheet of important provenance. Léon Cogniet became friend with Géricault in 1812, while they were both studying under Pierre Guérin (1774-1833) and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The two artists collaborated almost ten years later on the series of lithographs Etudes des Chevaux (1823), of which several impressions are included in our exhibition. During their lifelong friendship, Géricault was the subject of many of Cogniet's portraits, until the very last one on the artist's death bed. Our portrait shows him in the same year before his deadly illness (syphilis) with very short hair wearing a beret. His delicate face features are elegantly reproduced, conveying Géricault's intense expression. The print belonged to the artist Amédée Faure, who entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1824 - the same year when the print was conceived - and became, as Cogniet, a prolific portraitist and lithographer. The provenance suggests that our impression was given to Faure by Cogniet himself.
