American sculptor Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is internationally recognized for her monumental assemblages constructed of found materials. Her sculptural work comes out of and begins with drawing, as do the ambitious series of untitled lithographs she made in 1963 at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. The exhibition "Louise Nevelson: Energy Force" features the artist’s prints produced during this period that explore the optical possibilities and sensations of the printed surface.

While at Tamarind, Nevelson collaborated with a team of printers (John Dowell, Irwin Hollander, Aris Koutroulis, Jason Leese, and Ken Tyler) to produce twenty-six editions. To create her drawings on stone, she used materials such as cheesecloth and lace as image-making tools. She completed her forms by using the white of the paper in opposition to the opaque inks that were available at the time, working primarily in black with the occasional addition of deep indigo and brick red. The imagery of these 1963 lithographs suggests the boxes and recessed forms of her monumental sculptural walls, bringing the three-dimensional forms to a two-dimensional medium.
