MONO-SCREENPRINTS

Julie Cockburn, Lucy Jones, and Carol Robertson

Flowers Gallery is delighted to present a group show with focus on screenprinting in the practice of Julie Cockburn, Lucy Jones and Carol Robertson.

Julie Cockburn’s work is best defined by its delicate craftsmanship and by the transformation of everyday and found object into works of art. Cockburn partially obscures the found images in a process she describes as “paradoxically unmasking” their intrinsic truths. Printed at The Print Block near Whitstable, UK, the enlarged prints of sitters are given newfound vigour by layers of unique variations of dazzling polka dot veils and geometric patterns.

Painter and printmaker Lucy Jones is renowned for her raw, wild landscapes paintings and provocative self-portraits characterised by expressive brushwork and bold use of vibrant colour.
The monotypes, inspired by the landscapes of Shropshire UK, were printed with master printmaker Kip Gresham at the Cambridge Print Studio, Cambridge UK.

Carol Robertson's paintings remain firmly rooted within reductive abstract conventions. She was introduced to printmaking by making monotypes with Garner and Richard Tullis at the Tullis Print Workshop, Santa Barbara CA. She continued to experiment within the medium, most recently with master printmaker Kip Gresham. Copán is a series of monoprints inspired by the artist's travels in Central America. With the 2018 monoprints Free Fall, Robertson navigates new territory extending her tonal range into ever more complex unique colour variations.

The Copán monoprints were made after a trip to Central America to visit Maya archaeological sites, including Copán in western Honduras. My journey started in Southern Mexico, then progressed through Guatemala to Honduras and Belize. I found Mayan calendars particularly fascinating: complex circular systems guided by solar and lunar movements. Different calendars were used to track longer and shorter periods of time. Together with the vivid colours of the region my impressions will stay with me forever. The monoprints assimilate these influences: each one has its own character and colour variation.
