Nature's Elements

Nature's Elements

Cecily Brown, Ernesto Caivano, Ann Craven, Dylan Graham, Valerie Hammond, Yun-Fei Ji, Nicola López, Kiki Smith

The landscape has served as a source of inspiration and subject matter for artists since ancient times. Typically seen in the background of religious and genre scenes, history paintings and portraits up through the early nineteenth-century, the natural world became central to plein air painters and Impressionists by the end of the century. Artists working today continue to have a profound connection to nature, expanding and reconfiguring the once limited notion of landscape to include industrial and urban landscapes, artwork created in nature and from natural elements, and an environment affected by climate change. At the Neiman Center, artists have made a range of prints which take nature as their starting point from Kiki Smith’s focused and tender consideration of goat moths to Ernesto Caivano’s fantastical knight who slowly melds into his wooded surroundings to Nicola López’s remote landscapes altered by human intervention.

To me, nature is precious and wondrous; it's our intervention that causes mayhem.
