New York Views

Ten American artists including Martin Lewis, Howard Cook and Childe Hassam

This array of views of New York and New York life consists of a rare 1916 etching by Childe Hassam and then ends with a 1951 screenprint by Harry Shokler. Most of the works are primarily from the 1920s and 1930s. I tried to select prints which I consider to be especially fine examples of each artist’s work. Howard Cook’s dynamic lithograph of “New York Night” is a tour de force of lithography. Ernest Fiene excels with his large lithograph of “Waterfront Manhattan.” Among the etchings; we like the William McNulty’s “In the Fifties” with its dynamic perspective the period and Armin Landeck’s Hopperesque “Housetops, 14th Street.” Finally, the Martin Lewis drypoint called “Wet Saturday,” is a superb use of the drypoint medium and a stellar impression. It’s upbeat and a very appealing example of his work. Of course, New York has been an archetypal subject for artists over the years and the first half of the 20th century was especially productive and vibrant. We’ve added a checklist of these ten prints and the entries for each contains information about each artist and about the print itself.
