Ryan Gander
Composed around visual charades and unusually assembled objects, works by British artist Ryan Gander are catalysts for challenging established notions and viewer perceptions. Strung together by associative thought processes that juxtapose the commonly overlooked with the esoteric, Gander’s work solicits viewer participation, questioning language and knowledge, and reinventing modes of creating and presenting an artwork, with a tinge of humour.
Gander embarked on his STPI residency in 2015 with an inquisitive and experimental mindset, exploring the countless possibilities and processes of printmaking. He referenced renowned artists and printmakers from Hokusai to Matisse, “imagineering” – imagining and engineering – new narratives and challenging the values of craft and concept. Intervening in the technologies of printmaking from the use of inaccurate colour registration to scavenged relief tools and found residual inks, Gander’s works cleverly cross and consider time, material, labour and practice.

The language that's used here across the project… is all about parallel history and time, and the continuity and process of print. I've not investigated the medium of print that much in my work before. It's almost a strategy I employ here, with the intention of having no stylistic signature, and waking up everyday to try something totally new.
