Bosman, whose father was a sea captain, translates the fluidity and physicality of paint [and printing ink] into highly expressive water. So successful, he has made water his own subject.

The son of a Dutch sea captain and an Australian mother, Richard Bosman was born in Madras, India, and spent time in Suez and Singapore as a child. Between the ages of 7 and 21 he spent most of his life in Australia where he attended school in Perth. After studying at the Byam Shaw School of Painting and Drawing in London (1964-69), he moved to America where he undertook further training at the New York Studio School (1969-71) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine (1970). Initially influenced by abstract expressionism, Bosman began to develop his distinctive figurative style in the late 1970s and has become known for his dramatic, sometimes violent scenes inspired by the imagery of comic books, pulp novels and B-movies. He began to make prints in 1978 and worked with print publisher Brooke Alexander, in whose New York gallery he had his first solo exhibition in 1980. Although he has predominately produced woodcuts, he has used a variety of printing techniques including screenprinting, etching, lithography and monotyping. Bosman’s work has been exhibited widely and is represented in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He is currently based in Esopus, New York, where he continues to work.
