Sam Gilliam
Galerie Myrtis is pleased to present work by historical and contemporary artists whose voices offer discourse on our cultural, social, and political landscapes while presenting the beauty of our humanity.
Sam Gilliam worked at Lily Press® from 2016 to 2021 with master printmaker Susan Goldman. During this time, Gilliam created numerous works of art, including a monochromatic monoprint suite titled “+Miles/Miles” as a tribute to Miles Davis. Additionally, Gilliam created the screenprint “Purple Through Violet to Green” and the “School Bus” screenprint series, inspired by the school bus that passed by Sam’s studio every afternoon. These works were precursors to Gilliam’s 2020 exhibition “Existed Existing” at Pace Gallery. Gilliam drew inspiration from Cubism, Constructivism, and the interaction between Mondrian and colors on a grid.

Everything is geometric, and the color is used in a way that is equal.

Sam Gilliam (1933 - 2022) was an innovative color field painter who advanced the inventions associated with the Washington Color School. During the late 1970s, Gilliam discovered that by cutting and rearranging geometric shapes from thickly painted canvases, he could expand his experiments in color and improvisation.
