While I was Walking
While I was Walking
Stephanie Russ
The drawn and the photographic, the real and the imagined and the negotiation between both worlds especially when viewing the natural world and the changes that constantly occur within it are the basis of my work. The ideas of absence and presence, life and death, time and motion also influence the content of my work.
My recent body of work has thematically addressed issues related to water. My focus has been on waters geographical boundaries, scale, environmental impacts, its politics as well as its social and spiritual value. My early research began with scientific approaches such as sampling water taken in and around Montreal and trying to identify in a microscope all that is found in one drop of this water. This research resulted in the production of the two video works, micro and meso as well as large size prints and two artists books, the most recent being “Boat stories”which includes select stories of travels and life on the water.
